Lawler, Ray

Lawler, Ray (1921– ), Australian dramatist and actor, who had already written several light comedies when in 1949 his Cradle of Thunder was awarded first prize in a national competition. In 1955 the Union Theatre Repertory Company (see MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY) put on his Summer of the Seventeenth Doll. Produced in London (1957) and New York (1958), this story of two cane-cutters whose informal domestic arrangements erupt after 17 years is by far his best-known play. He later completed a ‘Doll’ trilogy with Kid Stakes (1975) and Other Times (1977), about the characters' earlier lives. Other plays included Piccadilly Bushman (1959), The Man Who Shot the Albatross (1971), about Captain Bligh, and Godsend (1982).
