Langner, Lawrence (1890–1962), successful patent agent in New York who was also a potent force in the American theatre. Born in Wales, he was educated in London and emigrated to the USA in 1911, becoming an American citizen. In 1914 he helped to organize the Washington Square Players, who produced his first play; he was also instrumental in helping the group to re-form as the Theatre Guild, of which he became a director, and for which, with the playwright Theresa Helburn (1887–1959), he supervised the production of over 200 plays. He was the founder and first president of the American Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford, Conn., and also founded and directed from 1931 to 1933 the New York Repertory Company, building for it the Country Playhouse, Westport, Conn.
