Knipper-Chekhova, Olga Leonardovna

Knipper-Chekhova, Olga Leonardovna (1870–1959), Russian actress, who joined the company of the Moscow Art Theatre on its foundation in 1898 and became famous for her interpretations of the heroines of Chekhov, whom she married in 1901. When the theatre revived The Seagull, which had been unsuccessful elsewhere, she was seen as Arkadina, and she created the roles of Elena Andreyevna in Uncle Vanya (1899), Masha in Three Sisters (1901), and Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard (1904). She played this last part again in 1943, on the occasion of the 300th performance of the play. After Chekhov's death in 1904 she remained with the Moscow Art Theatre, and though mainly considered at her best in poetic and delicately psychological roles, she was also much admired in such comedy parts as Shlestova in Griboyedov's Woe from Wit, which she played in a revival in 1925.
