Klein, Charles (1867–1915), British-born American dramatist, who went to the United States at the age of 15, and because of his short stature was able for some years afterwards to continue playing juvenile roles. He first came into prominence as co-author of
Heartsease (1897). Klein then had an immense success with two sentimental plays written for and produced by
Belasco,
The Auctioneer (1901) and
The Music Master (1904), in which David
Warfield became famous in the title-roles. In 1913 he helped to dramatize some Jewish short stories which as
Potash and Perlmutter were successful both in New York and in London a year later. He also wrote several plays on social issues, such as
The Lion and the Mouse (1905) and
The Third Degree (1909), about police malpractice. Klein was a play reader for Charles
Frohman and was drowned with him in the sinking of the
Lusitania.
