Kainz, Josef

Kainz, Josef (1858–1910), German actor, famed for the richness of his voice and the purity of his diction. He trained with the Meininger company and made his first appearance on the stage in 1874, in Vienna, where in 1899 he returned to end his days as a leading member of the Imperial Theatre. He was for some time in Munich, where he was the friend and favourite actor of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, and in 1883 played opposite Agnes Sorma in the newly founded Deutsches Theater in Berlin. He toured extensively in America in many of his best parts, which included Romeo, Hamlet, and the heroes of Grillparzer. He was also good as Molière's Tartuffe, Oswald in Ibsen's Ghosts, and Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac.
