Jodelle, Étienne (1532–73), French Renaissance poet and dramatist, a member (with Ronsard and others) of the famous ‘Pléiade’. His
Cléopâtre captive (1552) was the first French tragedy to be modelled on
Seneca. Together with a comedy,
Eugène, also an attempt to acclimatize a classical dramatic form, it was given before Henri II and his Court with Jodelle, not yet 21, as Cleopatra. The Pléiade, delighted at the success of one of their members, organized a festival in Jodelle's honour, prsenting him with a goat garlanded with ivy; the Church took umbrage at this pagan revival and Jodelle bore the brunt of its displeasure. Of his later plays only
Didon (1558) survives, but he deserves credit as the precursor of a great dramatic tradition.
