Hollingshead, John

Hollingshead, John (1827–1904), English theatre manager, whose name is chiefly associated with the Gaiety Theatre. He opened it in 1868 and remained there for 18 years, being succeeded by George Edwardes, who was to make it the home of musical comedy. Under Hollingshead it had been used mainly for burlesque. Hollingshead is credited with the introduction of matinées and with being the first manager to use electric light outside the theatre (in 1886). In 1880 he staged a translation by William Archer of Samfundets Støtter as Quicksands; or, The Pillars of Society, the first play by Ibsen to be seen in London.
