Harris, Augustus Glossop (1825–73), English actor and theatre manager, son of Joseph Glossop, first manager of the Royal Coburg Theatre (see
OLD VIC), and an opera singer named Mme Féron. Why Harris assumed the name by which he is known is uncertain. He was first seen on the stage in America at the age of 8 and later went to London, where he appeared at the
Princess's Theatre, taking over the management when Charles
Kean retired in 1859. It was under him that
Fechter made his first appearance in London. But it is as the manager responsible for opera and ballet at
Covent Garden for 27 years that he is chiefly remembered. He also directed opera in Madrid, Paris, Berlin, and St Petersburg (Leningrad), proving himself an excellent stage manager, with a good eye for grouping and colour. He was the father of the theatre manager Sir Augustus
Harris.
