Hallam, Lewis, the younger

Hallam, Lewis, the younger (c.1740–1808), son of the above, who went with his father to Williamsburg in 1752 and in 1757 became leading man of the combined companies of his mother and stepfather, going with them to New York, where in 1758, as the American Company they played in a temporary theatre on Cruger's Wharf. Lewis was an excellent actor and appeared in Godfrey's The Prince of Parthia (1767), the first American play to be given a professional production. After the death of Douglass in 1786 he took over the American Company, first with Henry and later with Hodgkinson and Dunlap until 1797, when he retired from management, though he continued to act until his death.
