Group Theatre, London, private play-producing society founded in 1933 to present modern non-commercial plays and revivals of experimental work. It had its headquarters at the
Westminster Theatre, where most of its productions were staged. These included
Timon of Athens in modern dress and T. S.
Eliot's Sweeney Agonistes (both 1935); the poetic plays of W. H.
Auden and Christopher Isherwood; and Stephen Spender's
Trial of a Judge (1938). Most of the plays were directed by
Rupert Doone (1904–66) on a bare stage with little scenery and few props but with the occasional use of masks. Disbanded during the Second World War, the society was re-formed and gave as its first production a translation of
Sartre's Les Mouches as
The Flies. It continued to function spasmodically for a couple of years, but finally disappeared in about 1953.
