Goldsmith, Oliver (1730–74), Irish poet, novelist, and dramatist, whose two plays
The Good-Natured Man (1768) and
She Stoops to Conquer (1773) stand, like the works of Sheridan his contemporary, far in advance of the drama of his time. The first, produced by the elder
Colman at
Covent Garden, had a cool reception, but the second, also at Covent Garden, was an immediate success. Satirizing London snobbery, it has little in common with the genteel comedy of the day and has been constantly revived. Goldsmith wrote nothing more for the theatre, but in 1878 his novel
The Vicar of Wakefield was made into a charming play,
Olivia by W. G. Wills, with Ellen
Terry as the young heroine.
