Género Chico, or
teatro por horas, generic term applied in Spain to a form of light dramatic entertainment dating from about 1868, which reached the height of its popularity towards the end of the 19th century. Deriving from the
sainete, it consisted at first of one-act scenes of everyday life, usually set in Madrid and heightened to the point of caricature. As the fashion for musical accompaniment became more widespread,
género chico became synonymous with the one-act
zarzuela. Though still to be seen in Madrid and the provinces, it has been largely superseded by the
astracanadas, sketches with wildly improbable plots and full of untranslatable puns and plays on words.
