Glasgow Repertory Theatre

Glasgow Repertory Theatre opened in 1909 with a production of Shaw's You Never Can Tell in the Royalty Theatre. For five seasons the excellent company produced works by many British and Continental dramatists, including The Seagull (1909), claimed as the first performance of Chekhov in English. In its initial efforts to foster a purely Scottish drama it produced a few plays in the vernacular, but its Scottish commitment was never very strong. The First World War forced it to close, the remaining funds being transferred to the St Andrew Society and later used to help launch the Scottish National Players.
