Gilbert John [ John Gibbs] (1810–89), American actor, who made his début in Boston in 1828. He then toured the Mississippi river towns until 1834 and returned to the Tremont Theatre, Boston, remaining there until it closed, playing character roles. An excellent comic actor, he was particularly good as Sir Anthony Absolute and Sir Peter Teazle in Sheridan's
The Rivals and
The School for Scandal. In 1847 he had a successful season in London and then returned to play at the
Park Theatre, New York, until it was destroyed by fire. He was with Lester
Wallack's company from 1861 until it was disbanded in 1888, dying the following year while touring with
Jefferson in
The Rivals.
