Gelosi

Gelosi, one of the earliest and best known of the commedia dell'arte companies, which after an initial visit to France in 1571 was summoned to play before the French king, Henri III, at Blois in 1577, and from there went to Paris, thus inaugurating the visits of the Italian players which resulted in the establishment of the Comédie-Italienne. In the company, which was attached to the household of the Duke of Mantua, were Francesco Andreini and his wife Isabella. After constant travelling the Gelosi returned to Paris in 1603, but on their way back to Italy in 1604 Isabella died at Lyons and her husband disbanded the troupe.
