Ganassa, Zan (?—c.1583), actor-manager of the commedia dell'arte, whose real name was probably Alberto Naseli. He is first heard of in about 1568, and his company was one of the earliest to leave Italy and travel abroad. He was in Paris in 1571, and a year later took part in the festivities held in honour of the marriage of the King of Navarre (later Henri IV) to Marguerite de Valois. A curious painting now in the Bayeux Museum is believed to represent a performance by Ganassa's company assisted by the French King and members of the royal household. It was, however, in Spain that Ganassa made his most successful tours, being found there frequently during the 1570s, and there seems to be no doubt that he exerted a considerable influence on the nascent Spanish professional theatre.
