Forestage, small area of the stage in front of the
proscenium arch and the front
curtain, actors approaching it either from the main stage or through the
proscenium doors. Known as the apron stage, itself a modified version of Elizabethan platform stage, it was the main acting area in Restoration times. Its loss proved a great handicap in staging revivals of Elizabethan and Restoration plays. In some new theatre buildings, such as the
Barbican Theatre, forestages were built out in front of the proscenium, or, as at the
Old Vic and the
Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, added to existing stages. In the
Lyttelton Theatre the proscenium arch can be adjusted to give a narrow forestage.
