Flies

Flies, space above the stage, hidden from the audience, where scenery can be lifted clear from the stage, or ‘flown’, by the manipulation of ropes. In the traditional system of hand working, the stage hands in charge of the flies were known as fly-men and worked on fly-floors, or galleries running along each side of the stage. Between the fly-floors there were formerly catwalks, narrow communicating bridges 2 to 3 ft. wide over each set of wings, slung on iron stirrups from the grid to which the ropes, or lines, were attached. Large Continental theatres and opera houses sometimes had as many as three pairs of fly-floors, but English theatres rarely had more than one pair. Scenery is now generally flown by the counterweight system.
