Eyre, Richard Charles Hastings

Eyre, Richard Charles Hastings (1943– ), English director, who became known for his work at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, first as Associate Director, 1967–70, then as Director of Productions, 1970–2. As Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse, 1973–8, he promoted the work of new playwrights. In 1981 he became an associate director of the National Theatre, his productions including an enormously successful revival of the musical Guys and Dolls, Gay's The Beggar's Opera (both 1982), and Gogol's The Government Inspector (1985). He directed several plays for the Royal Court, among them David Mamet's Edmond (1985) and The Shawl (1986); in 1986 he also directed High Society, a musical version of Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story for which he wrote the book. He twice tackled Hamlet, in 1980 at the Royal Court and in 1989 at the National Theatre, of which he became Artistic Director in 1988. In 1990 his highly praised productions of Richard III, with Ian McKellen, and David Hare's Racing Demon were staged there.
