Erckmann-Chatrian

Erckmann-Chatrian, pseudonym of two French authors who wrote novels and plays in collaboration, Emile Erckmann (1822–99) and Louis-Gratien-Charles-Alexandre Chatrian (1826–90). They are best remembered for their melodrama Le Juif polonais (The Polish Jew, 1869) which, in an English adaptation as The Bells, provided Irving with the fine part of Mathias. He played the part many times, and after his death it entered the repertory of his elder son, H. B. Irving, and was also revived by Martin-Harvey.
