Equity

Equity (American, British, and Canadian Actors' Equity Associations), trades unions formed to oversee and regulate the pay and conditions of those working in the theatre. American Actors' Equity, which deals only with performers in the legitimate theatre, was founded in 1913. It called its first strike in 1919, and was successful in gaining official recognition for itself and better contracts for its members. A second strike in 1960 resulted in further improvements in members' working conditions; in 1961 a policy of racial non-discrimination was set on foot. The union later suffered some reverses, but continues to press for the best possible conditions for its members.

British Actors' Equity was founded in 1929, the earlier Actors' Association, founded in 1891 with Irving as its President, and the Actors' Union, founded in 1905, both being short-lived. It now looks after the interests of all those working in theatre, in film, on radio, and in television. Variety artists originally had their own Federation, but this amalgamated with Equity in 1968.

Canadian Actors' Equity was originally a branch of the American body, with an office in Toronto which opened in 1955. It became independent in 1976. A West Coast office opened in Vancouver in 1979.
