Drake, Samuel [ Samuel Drake Bryant] (1768–1854), American actor-manager, born in England, who left for America in 1810 with his large and talented theatrical family. They performed in Boston for several years, moving to Albany in 1813 to join the company of John Bernard. They left for Kentucky in 1815, and after a long and dangerous journey performed in Louisville, Lexington, and Frankfort. Drake visited Missouri in 1820, and then went to Cincinnati. His was probably not the first company to appear in the West, but it was the most professional and accomplished and he established several theatres in Kentucky and elsewhere. His granddaughter Julia
Dean became an outstanding American actress.
