Downes, John (
fl. 1661–1710), author of
Roscius Anglicanus, a volume of scattered theatrical notes which is one of the rare sources of information on the early Restoration theatre. Downes wanted to be an actor, but his first appearance in
Davenant's The Siege of Rhodes (1661) was such a failure that he gave up, and worked back-stage as
prompter and
book-keeper.
Roscius Anglicanus, first published in 1708, was reprinted in 1886, in 1930, and in 1987 appeared in a new edition.
