Davenport, Fanny Lily Gypsy (1850–98), American actress, daughter of Edward
Davenport, who was on the stage as a child in her father's company. She made her adult début in 1865 as Mrs Mildmay in Tom
Taylor's Still Waters Run Deep, and from 1869 to 1877 was Augustin
Daly's leading lady in New York. She then formed her own company, starring with it in the principal theatres of the USA. Her range of parts was wide, including Shakespeare's heroines and such contemporary women as Polly Eccles in Robertson's
Caste and Lady Gay Spanker in
Boucicault's London Assurance. At the end of her career, between 1883 and 1894, she appeared in four plays by
Sardou:
Fedora,
Tosca,
Cleopatra, and
Gismonda.
