Crazy Gang, The

Crazy Gang, The, association of seven British comedians, consisting of three double-act teams— Bud Flanagan [ Robert Winthrop, originally Chaim Reuben Weintrop] (1896–1968) and Chesney Allen William Allen (1894–1982); Jimmie Nervo [ James Holloway] (1897–1975) and Teddy Knox [ Albert Edward Cromwell-Knox] (1896–1974); Charlie Naughton (1887–1976) and Jimmy Gold [ James McConigal] (1886–1967)—and ‘ Monsewer’ Eddie Gray (1897–1969), who appeared together in a number of ‘crazy’ shows at the London Palladium in the 1930s and the Victoria Palace from 1947 to 1960. All the Gang had wide experience of variety and circus comedy techniques, and were able to make specific individual contributions to their shows, which included knockabout, satirical, sentimental, and farcical incidents, with a good deal of improvisation.
