Crawford, Cheryl (1902–86), American director and producer, who in 1922 joined the
Theatre Guild, appearing in many of its later productions and being its casting manager from 1928 to 1930. She was also active in the foundation and running, with Harold
Clurman and Lee
Strasberg, of the
Group Theatre in 1930 (directing its first play, Paul
Green's The House of Connelly, 1931); of the American Repertory Theatre, in association with Eva
Le Gallienne and Margaret
Webster, in 1946; and of the Actors' Studio (see
METHOD) in 1947. In 1950 she became one of the directors of the Anta play series produced annually by the
American National Theatre and Academy. She also presented or co-presented productions such as the musicals
Brigadoon (1947) and
Paint Your Wagon (1951), several plays by Tennessee
Williams,
Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children (1963), and
Arbuzov's Do You Turn Somersaults? (1978).
