Cornish Rounds

Cornish Rounds, remains of circular earth-works in Cornwall (particularly the western part) which are now known to have been used as open-air theatres for annual performances of medieval mystery plays. These could accommodate on banks (usually seven) cut in the rising ground a large number of spectators grouped round a central area or ‘playing-place’ which must, from the stage directions, have contained rostrums or stages of varying levels. Some of these theatres were still in use in the 17th century.
