Cornell, Katharine (1893–1974), outstanding American actress, daughter of a theatre manager in Buffalo, who made her first appearance with the Washington Square Players in 1916. In 1919 in London she made a great success as Jo in a dramatization of Louisa M. Alcott's Little Women, and in New York she first came into prominence in Clemence Dane's A Bill of Divorcement (1921) and Will Shakespeare (1923). In 1924 she made the first of several appearances as Shaw's Candida, and in 1931 she appeared under her own management as Elizabeth Moulton-Barrett in Besier's The Barretts of Wimpole Street, her most famous role. It was directed by her husband Guthrie McClintic who also co-produced it with her, a pattern to be repeated in all her later work. Her range was impressively wide, including Shakespeare's Juliet (1934) and Cleopatra (1947), Jennifer Dubedat in Shaw's The Doctor's Dilemma (1941), Masha in Chekhov's Three Sisters (1942), and Anouilh's modernized Antigone (1946). She was also seen in new plays as diverse as Sidney Howard's drama Alien Corn (1933), Behrman's comedy No Time for Comedy (1939), and Fry's verse play The Dark is Light Enough (1955). Her final role was Mrs Patrick Campbell in Jerome Kilty's Dear Liar (1960). She retired on the death of her husband in 1961, the recipient of many honorary degrees and other awards.
