Corneille, Thomas (1625–1709), French dramatist, usually known as Corneille de l'Isle to distinguish him from his elder brother (above). He wrote over 40 plays, mostly successful at the time, though all are now forgotten. Timocrate (1656), his first tragedy, performed at the Marais, was immensely popular. His best plays are considered to be Ariane (1672), in which Mlle Champmeslé and later Rachel were outstanding, and Le Comte d'Essex (1678), given at the Hôtel de Bourgogne again with Champmeslé. Like his brother, the younger Corneille also wrote a number of comedies, some adapted from the Spanish and some on topical subjects.
