Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati, Ohio, is situated on a hilltop, and is the professional theatre for a three-state region of the Ohio River Valley. Of its two auditoriums, the Thompson Shelterhouse, seating 219, was converted from a gazebo in 1959, the Robert S. Marx Theatre, seating 627, being constructed in 1968. During the Sept.-Aug. subscription seasons, about six productions are presented in the larger theatre and four in the smaller. They have included 18 world premières and three American, as well as revivals of works by Shakespeare, Molière, Samuel Beckett, Tennessee Williams, and other classical and contemporary playwrights. Playhouse productions tour to other American cities, and the subscription seasons are augmented by special productions from all over the United States, and by community productions. The theatre also seeks new audiences through student seasons and special presentations, and is an important training resource.
