Christie, Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa [ Mrs Max Mallowan, née Miller] (1890–1976), English novelist and playwright, appointed DBE in 1970, on her 80th birthday, publication day of her 80th book. Although chiefly remembered for her detective fiction, she has a place in theatrical history as the author of The Mousetrap (originally written for radio), which opened in London at the Ambassadors Theatre on 25 Nov. 1952 and looks set to run for ever, transferring to the St Martin's Theatre in 1974. It was seen in New York in 1960. Mrs Christie dramatized several of her novels, including Ten Little Niggers (1943), now known as And Then There Were None, produced in New York in 1944 as Ten Little Indians; Appointment with Death (1945); Murder on the Nile (1946); and The Hollow (1951). Witness for the Prosecution (1953) was still running when Spider's Web (1954) was presented, thus giving her, with The Mousetrap, three plays running concurrently in the West End. She later wrote Verdict and The Unexpected Guest (both 1958), and adapted Go Back for Murder (1960) from her novel Five Little Pigs. The most successful adaptations of her novels by other hands were Love from a Stranger (1936), based on Philomel Cottage, and Murder at the Vicarage (1950). A Murder is Announced, another adaptation, was produced posthumously in 1977.
