Chettle, Henry (c.1560–1607), prolific Elizabethan playwright, credited by Henslowe in his diary with a long list of plays, mostly written in collaboration and now lost. Of those that survive, the only one Chettle appears to have produced unaided was Hoffman, known also as Revenge for a Father (c.1602), which follows the pattern of the revenge tragedy set by Kyd. Chettle was also a printer, in which capacity he published the pamphlets of Nashe as well as Greene's A Groatsworth of Wit (1592), which contains the famous attack on Shakespeare.
