Champmeslé, Mlle [ Marie Desmares] (1643–98), French actress. She was in the company at the Marais in 1669, and profited so much from her teaching that in six months she was playing leading roles. She went to the Hôtel de Bourgogne in 1670, and became so popular that the rival troupes competed for her services. She became the leading lady in tragedy of the Comédie-Française on its foundation in 1680, playing opposite Baron and remaining with the company until her death. She created many famous tragic roles, including the title-roles in Bérénice (1670) and Phèdre (1677) by Racine, whose mistress she was, and in the younger Corneille's Ariane (1672). She favoured a chanting, sing-song declamation which she taught to the leading actresses of the next generation.

In 1665 she married as her second husband the actor Charles Champmeslé (1642–1701), author of many light comedies, among them Crispin Chevalier (1673), a one-act farce, and Le Florentin (1685). He acted in the same companies as his wife, but, though considered a good tragic actor in his youth, was soon overshadowed by her.
