Capon, William

Capon, William (1757–1827), English architect and painter, who in 1791 was appointed scenic director of the new Drury Lane Theatre by John Philip Kemble. Of a plodding, pedestrian temperament, he was a painstaking antiquarian, which accorded well with Kemble's plans for scenic reform. He continued to work at Drury Lane until the theatre was burnt down in 1809, involving the loss of a large sum of money due to him for his scenery. He again worked for Kemble when he took over Covent Garden Theatre, where many of Capon's elaborately detailed sets remained in use for many years.
