Capitano, II

Capitano, II, braggart soldier of the commedia dell'arte, vainglorious and cowardly, usually a Spaniard. One of the first to play him was Andreini, as Capitano Spavento. In the 17th century Silvio Fiorillo played the part as Capitano Matamoros, ‘death to the Moors’, anglicized as Captain Matamore II Capitano may derive from the Miles Gloriosus of Plautus, and perhaps contributed something to Shakespeare's Armado in Love's Labour's Lost and Pistol in Henry IV, Part 2 and The Merry Wives of Windsor.
