Burbage, Richard (
c.1567–1619), younger son of James (above) and the first outstanding English actor. Though short and fat, he created most of Shakespeare's great tragic roles—Hamlet, Othello, Lear, Richard III, the last being accounted his finest part. He appeared in a number of other contemporary plays, his roles including Hieronimo in the revised version of
Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy (1597) and Ferdinand in Webster's
The Duchess of Malfi (1614). He was associated with his brother Cuthbert in the management of the
Theatre and the building of the
Globe Theatre, scene of his greatest triumphs. His acting career began early, probably under the tuition of his father, the first mention of him being in 1590 when he was with the
Admiral's Men. He became the leading actor of the
Chamberlain's Men on their formation in 1594 and retained that position when in 1603 they were reorganized as the
King's Men. Burbage's name long remained synonymous with all that was best in English acting.
