Burbage, James [ James Burbadge, James Burbege] (c.1530–97), builder of the first permanent playhouse in London, the Theatre. This opened in 1576 and was used by Leicester's Men with whom Burbage, a carpenter by trade, had begun to act in about 1572. A man of violent temper, stubborn and unscrupulous and beset all his life by financial and other difficulties, he never wavered in his allegiance to the theatre, and though apparently not a good actor himself he was excellent at selecting and training his fellow players, among them his son Richard (below). In 1596 James took over part of an old monastery and adapted it as the second Blackfriars Theatre, to use in winter in place of the unroofed Theatre, but he died before getting permission to open it.

The project was completed by his eldest son Cuthbert (c.1566–1636), who also helped to dismantle the Theatre and build the first Globe Theatre.
