Brighouse, Harold (1882–1958), English dramatist, usually referred to as one of the so-called ‘Manchester School’, as his early realistic comedies of North-country life were produced at the Gaiety Theatre there under Miss
Horniman. The only one of his works to survive on the stage is
Hobson's Choice (1916), in which a cobbler's headstrong daughter insists on marrying her father's timid little employee. The play has been revived many times.
