Brighella

Brighella, one of the zanni or servant roles of the commedia dell'arte. Originally a thief and a bully, with much in him of the Neapolitan street-corner boy, he later became a lackey. Through the establishment of the Comédie-Italienne in Paris he influenced the development of the French valets of Marivaux, and so the Figaro of Beaumarchais.
