Bérain, Jean (1637–1711), French theatrical designer, who replaced
Vigarani at the
Salle des Machines. In 1674 he became designer to the King, and the costumes and decorations which he prepared for Court spectacles greatly influenced all forms of contemporary art. Their most striking characteristic is the complete synthesis of fantasy and contemporary taste. There was no attempt at realism or archaeological reconstruction, and even in costumes for Romans, Turks, or mythological characters, the exotic elements were absorbed into an intensely personal style which left its impress on contemporaries and successors alike.
