Bourchier, Arthur

Bourchier, Arthur (1863–1927), English actor-manager, husband of Violet Vanbrugh whom he married in 1894. He was one of the founders of the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS) (see OXFORD). On leaving the university he joined Lillie Langtry's company and after his marriage he toured with his wife, who played the leading parts in his productions, many of them comedies and farces adapted from the French. From 1900 to 1906 he was in management at the Garrick Theatre, where he appeared as Macbeth, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, and in a number of modern plays, among them Pinero's Iris (1901). In 1910 he joined Tree's company at Her (then His) Majesty's Theatre and was again seen in Shakespeare, being particularly admired as Henry VIII. He was at his best in truculent, fiery, or hearty parts, but had little subtlety and resented criticism, spoiling much of his best work by impatience.
