Copyright
Bolt, Robert Oxton (1924–95), English dramatist. He first attracted attention with
Flowering Cherry (1957; NY, 1959), in which Ralph
Richardson played a man with a pipe-dream of owning an apple orchard. It was followed by
The Tiger and the Horse (1960), with Michael
Redgrave and his daughter Vanessa, and
A Man for All Seasons (also 1960; NY, 1961), an outstanding portrait of Sir Thomas More, played by Paul
Scofield.
Gentle Jack (1963), starring Edith
Evans, had only a short run, but after a play for children,
The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew (1965), and
Brother and Sister (1967), which was seen only in the provinces, Bolt had another success with
Vivat! Vivat Regina! (1970), about the relationship between Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots, first seen at
Chichester and transferred to London (1970; NY, 1972). Another historical play,
State of Revolution (1977), featuring Trotsky and Lenin, was produced at the
National Theatre. He also wrote several screenplays.
