Boards, component parts of the stage floor, which run up- and down-stage supported on joists running crossways; used also as a phrase indicating the acting profession, to be ‘on the boards’ or to ‘tread the boards’ signifying ‘to be an actor’. In modern theatres the boards form an unbroken expanse, but in earlier times they were removable, to facilitate the working of traps and machinery.
