Blakely, Colin George Edward (1930–87), rugged Irish-born actor, whose early death robbed the British stage of a powerful talent. He appeared first in Belfast in 1958, making his London début at the
Royal Court Theatre in
O'Casey's Cock-a-Doodle-Dandy (1959). In 1963 he joined the newly founded
National Theatre company, where he soon made an outstanding success as Pizarro in
Shaffer's The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1964). His career with the National provided many other notable roles, including the title-roles in
Brighouse's Hobson's Choice (1965) and
Jonson's Volpone (1968), John Proctor in Miller's
The Crucible (1965) and Captain Shotover in Shaw's
Heartbreak House (1975). He had a season with the
RSC (
Pinter's Old Times, 1971,
Titus Andronicus, 1972), and was seen in the West End in
Ayckbourn's Just between Ourselves,
De Filippo's Filumena (both 1977), Alan
Bennett's Enjoy (1980), and a notable revival of Miller's
All My Sons (1981). He also starred in the West End productions of two National Theatre plays, Shaffer's
Equus (1976) and Ayckbourn's
A Chorus of Disapproval (1986), the latter being his last appearance on the stage.
