Bird, Theophilus (1608–64), English actor, who bridged the gap between the Caroline and Restoration theatres. He was the son of a minor actor who appears frequently in
Henslowe's diary as a member of the
Admiral's Men. Theophilus is first found playing female parts with
Queen Henrietta's Men, but by 1635 he had graduated to male parts. Shortly afterwards he married Anne, eldest daughter of Christopher
Beeston. In 1637 he joined the
King's Men, remaining with them until the closing of the theatres in 1642. He is named first in
Downes's list of actors who appeared immediately on the reopening of the theatres in 1660, and
Pepys notes a rumour that he had broken his leg while fencing in a play in 1662.
