Beeston, Christopher

Beeston, Christopher (?1570–1638), important figure of the Jacobean and Caroline stage. He began his career as an actor with Strange's Men, and in 1602 was with Worcester's Men at the Rose Theatre, remaining with them when they became Queen Anne's Men in 1603 on the accession of James I. In 1616–17 he took over the Cockpit and ceased to act. In 1625 it became the home of Queen Henrietta's Men, with Beeston as manager, and when they disbanded in 1636 he trained a group called Beeston's Boys, some of whom later made their name in the Restoration theatre. On his death control of the company and the theatre passed to his son William (below). His eldest daughter Anne married the actor Theophilus Bird.
