Beaton, Sir Cecil Walter Hardy (1904–80), English designer and photographer. His first work for the stage was the scenery and costumes for the revue
Follow the Sun (1936). His first venture into the non-musical theatre was the costumes and scenery for
Gielgud's production of
Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan (1945). A year later he made his first appearance as an actor in an American production of this play, again designing the costumes and scenery. He was associated with revivals of
Pinero's The Second Mrs Tanqueray (1950),
Lonsdale's Aren't We All? (1953), and
Love's Labour's Lost (
Old Vic, 1954). He was also responsible for the décor and costumes of
Coward's Quadrille (1952; NY, 1954). His later work—including Enid
Bagnold's The Chalk Garden (1955), Coward's
Look after Lulu (1959), and the musical
Coco (1969)—was seen mostly in New York. His best-known work was the lavish and witty costume design for the musical
My Fair Lady (1956; London, 1958).
