Bates, Blanche (1873–1941), American actress, whose parents were both in the theatre. She first appeared on tour in California, from 1894 to 1898, and then made a brief appearance in New York under the management of Augustin Daly. It was, however, as the leading lady in plays by BelascoMadam Butterfly (1900), The Darling of the Gods (1902), and The Girl of the Golden West (1905)—that she made her reputation. She was also much admired as Cigarette in a dramatization of Ouida's Under Two Flags (1901). After leaving Belasco she continued to act, under her own and other managements, but less successfully, until her retirement in 1927.
