Barsacq, André (1909–73), French director and manager of Russian descent, who was studying design in Paris when a visit to the Atelier, then under the direction of
Dullin, turned his thoughts to the theatre. He worked with Dullin on several plays and films, including the 1928 adaptation of
Jonson's Volpone by Jules
Romains, and in 1937 co-founded the Compagnie des Quatre Saisons, a travelling repertory company which was seen in the same year at the International Exhibition and then spent two years in the French Theatre in New York. Barsacq produced
Anouilh's Le Bal des voleurs (1938) and almost all his later plays until 1953, including the subversive
Antigone (1944). After the war Barsacq succeeded Dullin at the Atelier and remained there until his death, in spite of illness and financial difficulties, and introducing to Parisian audiences
Betti, Félicien
Marceau, and
Dürrenmatt. He also directed several successful adaptations of
Chekhov, Dostoevsky, and
Turgenev.
