Barraca, La

Barraca, La, Spanish theatre company, more formally known as the Teatro Universitario, formed after the creation of the Spanish Republic in 1931 to tour plays from the classical repertoire around rural areas. Headed by García Lorca and Eduardo Ungarte, the company, consisting largely of students, met with an enthusiastic response and influenced the form of the three great tragedies of Lorca's maturity. It disappeared after the Spanish Civil War.
